Scratchboard, sometimes called scraper board, is a very old medium with a history reaching back thousands of years. Modern scratchboard material is a multilayer material consisting usually of a hard base made of masonite or very heavy paper stock which is then thinly coated with a light colored clay medium and finally a coating of black ink. Working from original photographs, Debbie creates the image by scraping away the black ink leaving the white clay exposed. By using a complex and varied pattern of lines, detailed representations of light and shadow are possible. Color is added to selected areas and then additional scraping can be added to enhance highlights. Debbie works with a variety of etching tools from a straight pin to special scrapers custom made for her by her husband. Original and gicleé prints of original works are available. A small photo, as below, of the original art while it is in progress, is attached to each piece of Debbie's work. |
